According to “The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali”, “Asana means the posture that brings comfort and steadiness.”

The asanas were created to keep our bodies limber, supple, flexible, free of toxins, etc in order to sit in meditation. If your body is not adequately prepared for seated meditation your mind will be distracted by the bodily discomfort.

Each asana is designed for one reason or another to rid the body of toxins, ease pain and stiffness, increase flexibility, etc to allow a yogi to sit comfortably in meditation for a length of time.
